Humorous Wedding Toasts - or not?

When I started thinking about writing my best man speech, the first thing that came to mind was, “How am I going to pull off a humorous wedding toast?”  That just isn’t something that comes naturally to me. Besides, being an eligible bachelor, I sure didn’t want my jokes to bomb with all the single ladies in the crowd.

Now, I don’t think the entire speech needs to be funny, but I do think that some really funny, well placed jokes makes for a really successful wedding toast. After all, if you can pull off some really humorous stuff, it could turn out to be the most memorable part of the whole wedding.

You have to walk a fine line and make sure that you don’t offend anyone and that it is all done in good taste. Like I said, I really wanted to come up with some funny material. But it could turn real bad if your remarks were misunderstood and instead of being humorous, you ended up ticking off the groom and/or bride and really embarrass yourself in front of all the guests. I was determined to create a speech that showed good taste but was still able to get the crowd laughing.

Tips for Funny Toasts

The whole point of wanting to deliver a humorous wedding toast is to engage the guests and get them really intrigued into hearing what you are going to say next. Therefore, if used appropriately, the jokes will keep their attention. Something I learned while researching the whole “best man wedding toast etiquette” is to first write out your speech without any of the jokes, then go back and strategically add in the jokes. This kept the jokes under control and spread out through the entire speech.

I was able to create a toast that had a good balance of both humor and other moving and heartwarming memories. In all honestly, after delivering a few of these speeches, I have found it a real advantage doing it this way. Getting a good laugh from the guests does wonders to calm me down so I can get through some of the more emotional parts of the wedding toast. It is going to be nerve racking no matter what, however, once I tell that first joke and everyone is laughing, then I can really get into the groove of delivering a great speech.

Another technique that I learned was to get the crowd involved in my speech. I can pick out friends in the crowd and dialogue with them and get them to go along with my jokes. Also, I will let you in on another secret. I always practice my speech with a buddy a few times, which really helps calm the nerves and I can work on my delivery of the funny jokes.  I always get a constructive critique of my speech, so I can make adjustments and make it even better. These are the things that I did and worked really well when I was preparing for my speeches.

My last word of advice (and it’s a good one) is to seek out the Internet for some best man speech examples. I found some great information this way and it saved me a lot of time, since I didn’t have to come up with all the material on my own. Click Here to see the book I liked the best and recommend.
